چکیده

Nearly simultaneous VLBA observations of 3C 84, the radio source associated with NGC 1275, have been made at multiple frequencies to study the free-free absorption of the northern, or “counterjet”, feature found by Walker, Romney, and Benson (1994) and by Vermeulen, Readhead, and Backer (1994). Our observations confirm that the spectra are consistent with free-free absorption and eliminate the possibility that the earlier result was an effect of variability. The northern feature is well resolved spatially, so images have been made showing the distribution of the absorption over a region of about 1.5 pc on a side, beginning about 1.5 pc from the presumed location of the central object. That distribution is dominated by a strong decrease with radial distance. The magnitude of the absoption near 2.5 pc projected distance from the central object is consistent with a 104 K gas with an emission measure of about 5× 108 pc cm−6. The geometry is consistent with absorption by ionized gas associated with an accretion disk. The data provide firm constraints for models of the outer regions of accretion disks and, perhaps, associated winds. The physical conditions in the inner parsec of accretion disks believed to orbit the central black holes in active galactic nuclei can be probed by imaging the absorption (by ionized gas in the disk) of background emission from a radio counterjet. We report high angular resolution VLBI observations of the nearby (∼ 40 Mpc) radio galaxy NGC 4261 that confirm free-free absorption of radio emissio...

The Ionization Fraction in the Obscuring ‘Torus’ of an Active Galactic Nucleus

The LINER galaxy NGC 2639 contains a water vapor megamaser, suggesting the presence of an edge-on nuclear accretion disk or torus. This galaxy is thus a good candidate for revealing absorption by the torus of any compact nuclear continuum emission. In this paper, we report VLBA radio maps at three frequencies and an ASCA X-ray spectrum obtained to search for free-free and photoelectric absorpti...

A Vlba Search for a Stimulated Recombination Line from the Accretion Region in Ngc 1275

The radio source 3C 84, in NGC 1275, has a two sided structure on parsec scales. The northern feature, presumed to be associated with a jet moving away from the Earth, shows strong evidence for free-free absorption. The ionized gas responsible for that absorption would be a source of detectable stimulated recombination line emission for a wide range of physical conditions. The VLBA has been use...

Neutral Hydrogen (21 cm) Absorption in Seyfert Galaxies: Evidence for Free-free Absorption and Sub-kiloparsec Gaseous Disks

Active galaxies are thought to be both fueled and obscured by neutral gas removed from the host galaxy and funneled into a central accretion disk. We performed a VLA imaging survey of 21 cm absorption in Seyfert and starburst nuclei to study the neutral gas in the near-nuclear environment. With the exception of NGC 4151, the absorbing gas traces 100 pc scale, rotating disks aligned with the out...

Origin of the Counter - Rotating Gas in NGC 1596 3

We present Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) H I imaging of the edge-on galaxy NGC 1596, which was recently found to have counter-rotating ionized gas in its center (< 15). We find a large H I envelope associated with a nearby companion, the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1602. The H I covers a region ≈ 11.9×13.4 (62×70 kpc) and the total H I mass detected is 2.5±0.1× 10 M⊙ (assuming an 18 M...
